KJV
1 ¶ Moreover <1161>, brethren <80>, I would <2309> (5719) not <3756> that ye <5209> should be ignorant <50> (5721), how that <3754> all <3956> our <2257> fathers <3962> were <2258> (5713) under <5259> the cloud <3507>, and <2532> all <3956> passed <1330> (5627) through <1223> the sea <2281>;
2 And <2532> were <907> <0> all <3956> baptized <907> (5668) unto <1519> Moses <3475> in <1722> the cloud <3507> and <2532> in <1722> the sea <2281>;

1. Having just explained (1Co 9:25-27) that those who endeavor to do their best were self-controlled in all things and that he himself brought his body into subjection daily to avoid being cast away, Paul called upon those who read his letter to consider Israel’s example; people who didn’t seek their best, who failed to exercise self-control.
a. He explained that all of Israel was baptized into Moses in the cloud and when they walked through the midst of the sea.
(1) Prior to the exodus out of Egypt, Israel was held without hope, under bondage.
(2) God sent Moses as a deliverer Israel and although Pharaoh tried to prevent Israel from receiving their freedom, Moses was successful.
b. Israel had not been freed from the Egypt and bondage until having passed through the baptism (Exo 14:13, 21-30).
(1) With the cloud over them and the walls of sea water about them, they were immersed or baptized (Exo 13:21-22; 14:19-20; Num 14:14; Psa 105:39).
(2) Paul was saying that in baptism they had become united with Moses, their savior.
3 And <2532> did <5315> <0> all <3956> eat <5315> (5627) the same <846> spiritual <4152> meat <1033>;
4 And <2532> did <4095> <0> all <3956> drink <4095> (5627) the same <846> spiritual <4152> drink <4188>: for <1063> they drank <4095> (5707) of <1537> that spiritual <4152> Rock <4073> that followed them <190> (5723): and <1161> that Rock <4073> was <2258> (5713) Christ <5547>. {followed…: or, went with them}

2. In addition, following their baptism into Moses, God had supplied Israel with the manna (Exo 16:21-22), with drink (cp. Exo 17:1-7; Num 20:2-13) and with those, they all participated in the spiritual meal with Christ (Exo 16; Psa 78:25; Joh 6:31).
Israel’s Failure
B. ... with many of them God was not well pleased ... (10:5).
5 But <235> with <1722> many <4119> of them <846> God <2316> was <2106> <0> not <3756> well pleased <2106> (5656): for <1063> they were overthrown <2693> (5681) in <1722> the wilderness <2048>.

1. In spite of their unique relationship God had given them Israel proved unfaithful to God.
a. Only Caleb and Joshua of that whole generation of people over twenty, entered the land of promise; not even Aaron or Moses entered it (Num 14:20-24, 28-35; Deu 1:34-40).
b. Few were saved (cf. Num 13; Mat 7:13-14).
Transition: Unlike Israel who failed to capitalize on the privilege God had given them, let’s learn from the lessons of the past and apply them to our present.
II. LESSONS FOR THE PRESENT (10:6-10).
Warnings For Us
A. ... these things were our examples ... these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition ... (10:6-11).
6 ¶ Now <1161> these things <5023> were <1096> (5675) our <2257> examples <5179>, to the intent <1519> we <2248> should <1511> (5750) not <3361> lust after evil <2556> things <1938>, as <2531> they also <2548> lusted <1937> (5656). {our…: Gr. our figures}

1. Paul used the past experience of Israel to teach Christians in the present, what to avoid in order to avoid similar outcome as Israel.
a. The way we learn from the Old Testament is by considering those historical events, and the principles they teach, in reference to our own spiritual lives.
(1) As baptism of the Israelites accomplished a deliverance from the land of bondage in Egypt so Christians in baptism are freed from bondage to sin (Mar 16:16; Act 2:38; 22:16; 1Pe 3:21).
(2) Just as Israel ate a meal with Christ so we do in partaking in the Lord’s Supper on the first day of the week.
b. “Now” points to the evidence as to why God wasn't pleased with Israel.
c. As ever relevant, the Old Testament examples fill a very important purpose.
(1) Therefore, preaching from the Old Testament is important because people as a whole haven’t changed regarding committing the same sins or any sins.
(2) It is important because God still feels the same way about sin.
(3) The sins Paul listed were when committed in the days of Moses in the wilderness, they were wrong in the middle of the first century with the saints at Corinth in Greece and they are still wrong.
d. Paul admonished the saints to avoid:
Idolaters
7 Neither <3366> be ye <1096> (5737) idolaters <1496>, as <2531> were some <5100> of them <846>; as <5613> it is written <1125> (5769), The people <2992> sat down <2523> (5656) to eat <5315> (5629) and <2532> drink <4095> (5629), and <2532> rose up <450> (5656) to play <3815> (5721).

(1) idolatry (Exo 32; Col 3:5; Php 3:19; 2Ti 3:4)
(a) When the people of Israel grew tired of waiting for Moses to come down from the mountain where he was talking with God, they begged Aaron to create an idol for them to worship.
(b) Significant is that they really wanted was not just another form of God to behold but another god other then the almighty worship.
(c) Faithful men from the tribe of Levi struck down 3000 of the Israelites and God sent a plague to afflict them even more for their sin.
(d) Similarly, we too can fall to idol worship by allowing anything to come between us in our lives and God.
Fornication
8 Neither <3366> let us commit fornication <4203> (5725), as <2531> some <5100> of them <846> committed <4203> (5656), and <2532> fell <4098> (5627) in <1722> one <3391> day <2250> three <5140> and twenty <1501> thousand <5505>.
