Various Terms That Describe The Church

We have been studying about the church, as it is revealed in the scriptures. As we finish our study, we would do well to look at the various terms that the Lord has used throughout the New Testament in reference to her. Look up the verse listed below each of the headings, and make comments in the space provided.
  1. The church is the beautiful bride of Christ.

  2. The Church Is The Lord's Army.
    1. I Timothy 1:18.

    6. Ephesians 6:10-17.
    7. Revelation 11:7; 13:7; 17:14; 16:16.

  3. The church is the temple of God.
    1. I Corinthians 3:16-17.
    2. Ephesians 2:19-22.
    3. Hebrews 9:1-14 (Don't get frustrated if you don't see it in this verse. We will discuss it in class)

  4. The church is a family.
    1. Galatians 6:10; Ephesians 2:19.
    2. Ephesians 3:14-15.
    3. Hebrews 3:6.
    4. Romans 8:14-16.
    5. Hebrews 2:11; Romans 8:17.
    6. Philemon 16.
    7. I John 2:10.

  5. The church is the body of Christ.
    1. Ephesians 1:22-23.

    3. Colossians 1:24.
    4. Romans 12:4-5.
    5. I Corinthians 12:15-25.

  6. The church is the kingdom of God.
    1. Mark 9:1; Acts 2:1-4.
    2. Colossians 1:13.
    3. Revelation 1:9.

  7. The church is the pillar and ground of the truth.
    1. I Timothy 3:15.
    2. Although this is the only time the term is used, the idea is expressed in other ways, and places.
      1. The church is to teach and defend the truth.
      2. The church is to obey the truth.
